Tell Governor Bentley that Alabama Can’t Afford to be Arizona

on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 17:58

Last year, Arizona passed SB 1070, at the time the strictest immigration law in the nation.  SB 1070 criminalized undocumented immigrants, made it illegal to hire one, and gave local police forces expanded powers to crack down on the undocumented population.  It also promptly ostracized Arizona as a bastion of intolerance, and the state lost hundreds of millions of dollars in lost tourism dollars and other boycotts.

Now, Governor Bentley wants to sign Alabama’s version of SB 1070, HB 56.  HB 56 is Arizona on steroids—it would ask K-12 schools to keep track of which students were undocumented, and would make it illegal to hire, aid, transport, or rent housing to undocumented immigrants.

The House has already passed HB 56, which has also passed out of a Senate committee and may be taken to the Senate floor for a vote.  It may only be a matter of time before the bill hits the governor’s desk.  We need to tell Governor Bentley that Alabama cannot afford this costly, ineffective, and unconstitutional bill.  Sign our petition asking him to veto the bill if and when it hits his desk.
