The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice will kick off our campaign against HB 56 at 2:00 PM Central Time tomorrow with a news conference in advance of an Ad Hoc Congressional Hearing being held at the Council Chambers on the 3rd Floor of Birmingham City Hall. Present will be a number of key members of Congress, including immigration reform champion, Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL), who will listen to stories of those who have been affected by the law.

Yesterday, a group of more than 100 people gathered in Gardendale, Alabama to protest the enactment of HB 56, Alabama’s strict new anti-immigrant law.  They mobilized outside a church where HB 56 backer Senator Scott Beason is a regular attendee, though the protesters were not able to meet or speak with Senator Beason.  The gathering brought together community faith leaders and their congregations to protest HB 56’s harmful effects on Alabama’s families

Tell Governor Bentley that Alabama Can’t Afford to be Arizona

Last year, Arizona passed SB 1070, at the time the strictest immigration law in the nation.  SB 1070 criminalized undocumented immigrants, made it illegal to hire one, and gave local police forces expanded powers to crack down on the undocumented population.  It also promptly ostracized Arizona as a bastion of intolerance, and the state lost hundreds of millions of dollars in lost tourism dollars and other boycotts.

Alabama Coatition for Immigrant Justice Opposes HB 56

A new press release today from the Alabama Coalition of Immigrant Justice slammed Alabama’s upcoming HB 56 bill, saying the legislation would have a devastating impact upon the state.

The Coalition pointed out that communities and states (like Arizona) which have already enacted similarly harsh anti-immigration legislation have already seen harsh social and economic consequences.
